What Is Two-Phase Treatment?
Two-Phase Treatment is an orthodontic process that begins during childhood while some baby teeth are still present. The first phase, usually starting between ages 6 and 10, focuses on correcting jaw-related issues and creating space for permanent teeth. This early phase may involve expanders, limited braces, or other appliances to help guide facial growth and address problems like crossbites, underbites, or severe crowding.
After Phase One is complete, there is typically a resting period where we monitor development and wait for the remaining permanent teeth to come in naturally. Once they’ve erupted, Phase Two begins—usually during the teen years. This phase often involves full braces or Invisalign® to align the teeth, improve bite function, and refine the final position of the smile.
Why Consider Two-Phase Treatment?
Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct while the jaw is still growing. By addressing issues early, we can:
- Help avoid the need for jaw surgery or tooth extractions later
- Create the proper foundation for permanent teeth to come in straight
- Improve facial symmetry and bite function
- Shorten or simplify future orthodontic treatment
Two-Phase Treatment is not necessary for every child, but for those who need it, it can make a significant difference in the outcome of their overall treatment and long-term oral health.
How Do I Know If My Child Needs Two Phases?
-
Every child is unique. That’s why we recommend an orthodontic evaluation around age 7. Dr. Ramírez will assess your child’s jaw development, bite alignment, and eruption pattern of their teeth. If early treatment isn’t needed, we’ll simply monitor their growth and recommend the best time to begin braces or aligners later on.
However, if we detect issues like early crowding, jaw discrepancies, or habits such as thumb sucking that are affecting development, Phase One treatment may be recommended to guide their smile in the right direction early on.
What Happens Between the Phases?
-
After Phase One, we’ll enter a “resting period” where your child is seen for occasional check-ups. During this time, we don’t typically use appliances or braces unless necessary. The goal is to allow permanent teeth to erupt naturally into the improved space we’ve created.
Once all or most of the adult teeth are in, we’ll re-evaluate your child’s smile and begin Phase Two if needed. This second phase fine-tunes the alignment of the teeth and bite, helping ensure long-term stability and a beautiful result.
